From July 10 to 19, Suzdal will host the Second Denis Matsuev Summer Festival — Russia's largest open-air classical music festival. The Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve has prepared a special cultural programme for the festival, transforming the ancient town into an open cultural venue where music, literature, history, and art come together.

Over the course of ten days, visitors will enjoy sightseeing and themed tours, children's programmes featuring music workshops and creative labs, as well as a series of meetings with contemporary writers and poets, organized in collaboration with the Union of Writers of Russia.

Guided Tour Programme

The Museum-Reserve has prepared a special guided tour, “Suzdal. Music. Cinema.”, offering visitors the chance not only to see but also to hear the ancient town. Guests will discover magnificent architectural landmarks featured in famous films and experience how music reveals the beauty of thousand-year-old Suzdal, transforming it into a unified cultural space.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore the Spaso-Evfimiev Monastery and its gardens, as well as join guided and curator-led tours of the exhibition “Svomas: Free Avant-Garde Art Studios”, dedicated to the Mstyora Free Art Studios of the 1920s.

Every day, guests are invited to attend performances of sacred chants by the Male Choir of the Spaso-Evfimiev Monastery in the Transfiguration Cathedral. Admission to these performances is free with the purchase of a ticket to the monastery complex. Tickets and the guided tour schedule are available on the Museum-Reserve's website.

Programme in Collaboration with the Union of Writers of Russia

The Gold Treasury of the Spaso-Evfimiev Monastery will host the “Literary Salon” — a series of meetings with contemporary authors, poets, literary scholars, and publicists, organized in collaboration with the Union of Writers of Russia. Participants include Andrei Rubanov, Pavel Basinsky, Alexei Varlamov, Igor Volgin, Sergei Shargunov, Lev Naumov, Maxim Zhukov, and Vladislav Otroshenko.

The “Literary Salon” will serve as an open forum for discussions on contemporary literature, poetry, cinema, and cultural heritage. Andrei Rubanov will share his experience of writing the modern novel; Igor Volgin will explore the legacy of Fyodor Dostoevsky; Lev Naumov will present a lecture on the work of Andrei Tarkovsky and the making of the film Andrei Rublev; and Vladislav Otroshenko will discuss the mystery surrounding the second volume of Dead Souls and the unexpected possibilities of artificial intelligence in working with literary heritage.

At the children's cultural and educational centre “DOM”, young visitors will have the opportunity to meet children's and young adult authors, including the creators of popular book series: Elena Usacheva, Viktoria Tatur, Viktoria Toponogova, Anna Goncharova, Elena Nesterina, Natalia Elizarova, Irina Shcheglova, Violetta Minina, Ksenia Zhukova, and Tamara Kryukova. A total of ten meetings will take place, during which guests will discuss contemporary children's and young adult literature, talk about their favourite books and characters, and learn how stories and fictional characters are created.

Children's Programme

The children's programme includes craft workshops, music and theatre workshops, as well as interactive literary events for children organized in collaboration with the Union of Writers of Russia. Activities will take place daily from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the "DOM" Children's Cultural and Educational Centre, located within the Museum of Wooden Architecture.

A special part of the programme is dedicated to music and theatre. Nearly every day will begin with "Musical Stories" — interactive sessions immersing children in the world of Russian folklore through round dances, quadrilles, traditional games, and folk songs. In the "Music in Theatre" workshop, children will try their hand at being theatre sound designers, learning how to create sound effects and make musical instruments from everyday objects. The interactive performance "Secrets of the Old House" will introduce young audiences to traditional crafts through theatrical play and stories about historical household objects.

A special highlight of the programme will be the creative workshops dedicated to the traditional crafts of the Vladimir Province. During the "Secrets of Carpentry" workshops, children will discover historic woodworking tools, learn how wooden houses were built in old Rus', and explore why wooden architecture became one of the defining elements of Russian culture. In the "Printed Bell" textile workshop, participants will create a traditional no-sew rag doll and learn the techniques of applying printed patterns to fabric. In the "Botanical Panel" ceramics workshop, they will try hand-building with clay and create decorative panels featuring impressions of plants gathered from the museum's garden.

Young science and nature enthusiasts can join the "Garden Bed" BioLab, devoted to Suzdal's gardening traditions, medicinal herbs, and the design of historical herb gardens. Meanwhile, at the PLANKY Architecture Workshop, aspiring young architects will build towers, bridges, and wooden structures without glue or fasteners—using only balance, imagination, and engineering skills.

The Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve's cultural programme will become an integral part of the Denis Matsuev Summer Festival, creating a unique atmosphere where music, literature, history, art, and family togetherness come together in the historic setting of Suzdal.
